Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you think of books, do you always thing fiction story books? Well, with the the new Common Core my students need to start learning through reading. Non-fiction books are a great way to practice reading as well as LEARN in the process.
I have 25 students in my class, 14 of which are English Language Learners.
Many are on free or reduced lunch. We are a Title One school and many of my students come from economically struggling households. Even facing economic challenges, my students come to school ready and eager to learn.
My Project
I am requesting 5 different packs of non-fiction literature that include community helpers, mapping, continents, biographies, and American symbols. Children love to read. They have the most access to fiction books. But non-fiction is so important. Introducing them to this genre at an early age will only familiarize them with the text features and and get them used to reading this type of literature. Most of the text we read as an adult is non-fiction. It only makes sense to expose them early. Not only will they practice reading skills, they will learn something in the process.
Most of my students don't have many books at home.
When a parent does buy books, or takes their child to the library, they will get fiction books. It is my responsibility to provide as many non-fiction books to my students. These 5 sets will help increase my non-fiction library selections.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
