Learning About Our World Through Informational Text

My students need informational text to help work on vocabulary and building background knowledge. We need Scholastic News and Time for Kids.

My Students

My 1st grade students desire to be in school every day. Their goal throughout the year is to prepare for 2nd grade. I teach at a Title I school where a majority of students qualify for free meals.

My students come from a small, rural community, and thoroughly enjoy learning about the world through literature, science, and social studies.

They are intrigued to learn of the similarities and differences of their lives to the lives of others. They also enjoy responding to text through writing and illustrating about what they've learned.

My Project

My students live in a small rural town. They grow up within a rich culture and have meaningful experiences.

My students are actively engaged when learning about our world through science or social studies.

They are intrigued learning about the world with the resources we currently have, but the texts are dated. The articles will help my students learn more about our world through current events. The informational text will be both high-interest as well as grade-level appropriate. The articles will be a great way for them to compare and contrast what they know and what is going on in the world.
