Hello! I am a Kindergarten teacher in a large school in Durham County, North Carolina. My students and are some of the smartest, funniest, and most creative students you will ever meet!
During the day we try to have a least thirty minutes of Free Centers. During Free Centers students have the chance to pick a center they want to explore such as painting, blocks, water table, puzzles, or dramatic play. At the beginning of the year, many parents ask the value of these centers as opposed to structured learning time. The answer is that these centers are invaluable. Not only are they a chance for these five years olds to relax and interact with their peers, but it is teaching them HOW to interact with their peers. It also gives them a chance to act out scenes they have seen at home so they can process what happened and make them OK in their mind.
During their time in dramatic play, the kids love to use the housekeeping center. One of their favorite things to act out is cooking and preparing food for their "family." To aid my kids in their play I would like to give them some fake appliances such as a toaster, mixer, blender, and coffeemaker. Although these are little things, they will allow children the chance to practice being a "grown up" for a little while, which is a big thing!
