Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students attend an urban public school with over 500 children. 92% receive free or reduced price lunch. About half of our students are English language learners. Some students have speech and communication needs as well as autism. They come from diverse backgrounds, but have many things in common.

Students at our school love to learn, and they especially enjoy .

They enjoy learning about plants and animals and collaborating with students at different grade levels, with parents and members of our school community. Finally, they love teaching others what they have learned.

My Project

My students love to have animals in the classroom. We started a chicken project a few years ago, and it is still going strong. More teachers are borrowing our incubators. Plus, we have new chickens to feed and care for. In addition to learning about life cycles and animals and their babies, we are also learning how the chickens we keep are good at composting the fruits and veggies we eat for breakfast and lunch. The incubator will be used to hatch chickens in our kindergarten and after school program classrooms. The feed will be used daily as the students care for our baby chicks and older chickens as part of our class routine during recess and science. We currently have one brooder for our baby chicks and need another one since multiple classes are hatching chicks.

The students are learning about zoology, ecology, habitats and caring for others.

They are also sharing that knowledge with their families and with students in other grade levels who come to visit the chickens and the outdoor coop.
