My students need multiple sets of rich, engaging books for literature circles so we can meet complex learning standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and social studies.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage, and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.
Despite- and often because of-such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth, including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap- around program.
Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.
My Project
In our literature circles we read books that address the topics of social issues from past and present, across various cultures, in a way that builds a deeper, more sensitive knowledge of humanity- both its capacity for love and beauty, as well as the challenges we have faced in history and will meet in the future.
When students read books that touch their hearts and awake their consciences, we can move them to write and hold class discussions about their ideas and feelings.
When groups of students share a meaningful book, they can work together to analyze problems and solutions. Perhaps the most significant skill that students can develop in a literature circle is that of empathy, as they get to know a character deeply and immerse themselves in someone else's experience. When students develop empathy towards others, they grow in academics, civic responsibility, and personal pride. This is the power of "social awareness/sensitive actions" literature circles.
