Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember learning about history from a textbook? History does not have have to be boring! History CAN come alive through historical fiction and engage students on a whole new level!
I teach 5th grade in a low income area to a class of Latino students who are currently learning English as a second language.
My students are always incredibly excited to learn about history. However, the only resources we have are outdated textbooks that present material in a dry and dull way. It is my goal to inspire these children and help them learn about the past with quality literature.
My Project
In order to provide my students with a historical experience, I would LOVE to teach about the Donner Party with the book Patty Reed's Doll. If each student had a copy of the book, they could learn about the struggles people faced traveling West as well as practice their reading and English skills at the same time. I would be able to combine language arts and social studies instruction and teach my students with highly engaging, critical thinking reading lessons.
With your generosity, you can truly make a difference in the education of my students.
They will be given the opportunity to learn in a new way that will allow them to appreciate the past.
