Learning About Health & Fitness!

My students need equipment for PE. With a class set of yoga mats, my students will be able to strengthen their body and mind. With pedometers, they will be able to track how active they are.

My Students

My students attend school in Los Angeles, California. We serve a variety of students in grades TK-5th. We are a Title 1 school, which means many students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are from many diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and are always eager to learn!

We are environmental activists!

Alongside learning to read and write, we learn about the world around us and how we can preserve the beauty of our environment on a daily basis.

We love to work together and engage in many hands on activities that make learning come to life every day in our classroom.

Most of all, we believe in ourselves!

My Project

My students often complain and groan when it's time for PE. While some students love organized sports and competition, some find it intimidating. Many dislike being in the heat on the yard playing these games. My students have asked me for other alternatives for their daily exercise. They have expressed an interest in yoga, something that they see their parents doing and are curious about. They have also expressed a curiosity in what it means to count steps, and how many steps they may take during a given activity - something they have surely heard the adults in their life discussing. My students have expressed an interest in learning to do these fitness activities themselves.

My students are inquiring about the many ways to be active!

With yoga, students strengthen their bodies, but also learn how to channel energy, manage stress, and increase concentration. It also allows them to be healthy without having to feel the competition of being part of a group. It is a beneficial part of the school day, as it allows students a chance to refocus concentration prior to engaging in academic tasks. With pedometers, students learn how beneficial any given period of constant movement is for their body.

I plan to use these materials with my students so that they can learn healthy ways of exercising their mind and body. I will use these materials as part of a comprehensive PE program. We will use the pedometers to track how active we are during different activities. Students have asked for a PE activity that is calming, non-competitive, and interested in and we will be able to explore this with yoga. It is important students are exposed to a variety of physical activities at a young age so that they can find enjoyment in exercise.
