This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach two sections of Einstein English Language Arts at a Title 1 school. Most of my students are gifted and talented, but come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. My goal this year is broaden their experiences by providing them with more exposure to classical literature and deepen their critical reading and thinking skills.
The main focus of these novels is to shed light on difficult era of American history that sometimes doesn't receive the attention it deserves.
Many of our students deal with both poverty and come from minority backgrounds. The themes of economic struggle and hardships that Lenny and George face will resonate with many of them.
Ultimately I want to use these novellas to start literature circles and ultimately to be the basis for a mock trial in which the students will prosecute or defend the actions of the characters and the outcomes.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
