Learning About Force Through Creativity & Collaboration
My students need a variety of hands-on science resources; including K'Nex activities, to promote creativity and collaboration in our first grade classroom.
With critical thinking and collaboration at the forefront of education these days, I'm seeking resources and tools to promote inquiry in my first grade classroom.
Our classroom encompasses a diverse group of learners.
From diverse cultures to an assortment of socio-economic backgrounds and various learning needs, our school and grade level works diligently to meet the needs of all students. This grant proposal is for a variety of balance and motion hands-on resources (including K'Nex motion kits and rockets), reaching approximately twenty-four students per school year. Additionally, the resources from this grant will be used to purchase headphones to record their ideas on our class website. Students will be able to make use of this technology across multiple subject areas and this technology will be utilized for years to come.
My Project
Looking at the first grade science unit Balance and Motion, I will be creating a cross-curricular inquiry based unit and need many supplies to get this project off the ground! By receiving these resources and focusing on inquiry, I can motivate and reach all students.
A little more about this project: This year I began creating cross-curricular units (focus on English Language Arts & Science) that are Common Core aligned and focus on teaching activities through the use of the arts. Working collaboratively with the K'Nex materials (and rockets) in teams, each teammate has a specific role including: Project Manager, Engineer, Builder, Marketing Representative, and Writer. Students will work collaboratively using the arts to create a vehicle or machine. The students will present their machine, create an advertisement for their product, and blog (using headphones) about their product on our classroom website.
These inquiry-based units will awaken students curiosity and spark an enthusiasm for learning!
Based on my observations and feedback from my cross-curricular this year, it was amazing to see the student engagement within these units and the deep content knowledge the students attained!
