Learning About Financial Literacy in our Comfy Reading Nook!
Help me give my students age appropriate financial literacy books and comfortable seating for a special reading corner where they can go to learn about financial literacy with a partner and in small groups.
I teach in a rural high poverty Title I school, where 50% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Many students have parents in the military who are often deployed for months at the time. These students bring a variety of experiences to the classroom to share with students who have not had the opportunity to travel outside of our city. My students are extremely energetic and love hands-on learning experiences.
My students are quite active and love being given choices within the classroom.
Giving them the opportunity to make classroom decisions gives them a sense of ownership which in turn makes them work harder to become successful learners.
My students and I have worked hard to create a classroom community in which each person has a role. Students have jobs and together we make classroom decisions which creates a strong bond between us. We are a family and my students collaborate with one another to keep our classroom climate a positive one.
My Project
In my third grade class, they are always talking about what they would buy if they had more money. When I asked them what they thought certain items cost and salaries of certain jobs, I was shocked how little they understood about the value of money.
Financial literacy is an important real world skill that students should have more knowledge and understanding about and this will provide them with a fun space to meet together to read and learn together, not just during self selected reading, but during science and social studies as well.
Studies say a vast majority of minority students lack basic levels of financial literacy skills. These financial literacy picture books will be perfect to teach our 3rd graders about financial literacy in a fun way at their level. These 4 wobble stools will help them feel more comfortable in our classroom reading nook with learning this important real world material.
This warm and inviting reading nook featuring a diverse array of financial literacy books along with information about saving and when to spend their money will help them learn about the subject in a fun and comfortable way at their level. Thank you for supporting our financial literacy project!
