Learning About Environmental Changes with Disney

My students need a weatherization simulator (aka a snow cone machine) with a utility cart so they can learn about the properties of ice and impact on the environment.

My Students

What do you really know about ice and snow? My students think that they know EVERYTHING, but they are wrong. There is so much more for them to learn.

I teach in a school that is high poverty, over 60% of my students are economically disadvantaged.

We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. In just in my classroom alone, I have had over 50% of my class come and go during the school year. Many of my students are also here in the United States for the first time and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse. My students are concrete learners. I need materials that all my students can access and understand. I need to expand on the things that they do know and experience every day. I need science materials that will expand their understanding of their world.

My Project

My school is not a Title One school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. Our district adopted a science curriculum without textbooks or reading materials. We have no classroom library with materials to teach the topics covered by the curriculum. I need to try something that will engage my students and give me the opportunity to teach the scientific method, observation and report writing. I know this is a lot to ask from a project but I have come up with a creative solution to my problem. We need a weather machine. I plan to have my students study ice, the properties of ice, the changing states of matter. I also plan to have them do reports on ice, the ice cap and global warming. I have consulted the science curriculum coordinator who informed me that a weatherization stimulator would cost a fortune--nearly 3 times as much as a snow cone machine. With the machine, we can study ice all year long.

Your wonderful donation and help could make a world of difference to my students.

With your help my students would be able to learn about the scientific method- learn vocabulary, read and research meaningful topics. They would study the impact of weather and climate on the environment. I am confident that with your support my students would improve their academic backgrounds, and they would be successful. Their self image would improve. Please help my students.
