My students need novels and trade books such as Why Does Money Matter?, Cleo Edison Oliver, Playground Millionaire, and Beatrice's Goat, that connect financial literacy skills during our reading block to reinforce our financial skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal is to make my classroom fun and engaging. I want my students to love coming to school and to be active learners.
I have 24 enthusiastic second grade students.
They come to school excited to experience new things and eager to learn about the world around them. I teach in a low income school with a high number of English Language Learners. My school is very innovative and offers a wide variety of after school clubs to give opportunities to our students that many wouldn't have otherwise.
My Project
It’s important to teach financial literacy at every opportunity, starting from a very young age. Sadly, financial literacy or money management is not part of standards we teach, and that is why it is so important to tie it into the curriculum every chance we get.
Students need to have good habits in place as soon as they learn how to recognize coins.
I am requesting various novels and trade books that spotlight financial literacy, money management, or entrepreneurship. These novels will bring about discussions and real-world connections that can be made within our Literacy Block. Integrating these vital skills during small-group discussions and book talks will allow for each skill to be learned in a new perspective. For example, Lunch Money by Andrew Clements opens up the conversations about saving money (money management) and starting your own small business. "The Who Was" books selected are great avenues into entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. Various trade books are requested to read aloud such as Mama Panya's Pancakes and Beatrice's Goat. The books requested touch on goods and services, trade, needs vs wants, and budgeting. The ability to bring such critical skill sets into focus not just in social studies or math opens up so many doors of possibilities.
