Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Magnet school emphasizes the respect of self and others. This encompasses discipline and high expectations as well as activism and compassion. The kids know they will be Agents of Change and follow our school motto "Be the change you want to see in the world." African American students form about 75% of our school alongside with Hispanic and Asian children. This rich diversity of cultures offers unlimited opportunities to learn tolerance and team work while discovering new perspectives.
As our economy now ignores frontiers and we become citizens of the world, the best prepared individuals will be familiar with the concept of culture and tolerance. They will be aware of their own place, of their own definition. We are responsible for teaching these suddle and sensitive concepts and considering the challenge, we need to begin early! One of the units in our social studies curriculum addresses this need. It shows that students learn best if they start with their own environment, gathering information from different members of their family, interviewing grandma or calling uncle. They can explore various aspects of culture such as art, food, or stories and write to present their discoveries. However, the kids need the basic supplies to compile their research; we need binders to file their work and plastic sheets to protect or hold their documentation. Unfortunately, our school doesn't have any more funds available and our families can't afford donations to cover this cost.
Using simple binders, students would be able to create a culture book with nine sections: food, family, art, stories, clothes, songs, places and maps, games, special celebrations, and linguistic features. They would write these titles with foam sticker alphabets to add a lively aspect to the page; they would use heavy paper that would hold photos, drawings, and texts. Students will interview family members, research books, internet, and magazines for visuals or facts, and write a paragraph for each cultural component. They'll glue all their materials onto cardstock paper. This project will highly motivate children as it offers them an opportunity to explore and talk about themselves, enjoy parental attention, and work at their own pace.
As you can see, your donation will not only help children become competent citizens in tomorrow's world, but support writing, research, social studies skills. You'll make this engaging project happen in the class and definitely affect the kids' life. Indeed, the binder system would let students treasure their book for a long time and add to it as they move to other grade levels. By extension, you would bring joy to each family as well!
