Most of my children are from low-income families. Parents are working hard to break the cycle of poverty by enrolling their children in our Head Start program so they can continue with working or educating themselves through a GED program or through college. Most families are living in low-income based housing or with family members. They often worry about the next meal, proper clothing, and bills. At school, we want to help eliminate some of that worry by offering a safe, friendly, warm, and inviting place for their children.
Our children come to school eager to learn, and learning is done through play in our classroom!
My Project
My students come from diverse backgrounds and are interested in each other's culture. As an educator, I know that it is my job to not only teach diversity but to role model it as well. With these Dolls From Around the World and the Pose & Play Families, my students will be able to see some cultural differences and similarities.
Teaching diversity should not be a lesson that lasts only a week or two, but instead it should be incorporated into the classroom in every area all year long!
We will use the dolls (along with books that we already have) to learn about the differences in clothing, traditions, beliefs, food, music, education, and other important aspects. We will focus on acceptance and respect.
