Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning a second language is not an easy task, especially when the alphabetic principle is so complex. My students are faced with the challenge of learning and mastering the English alphabetic principle everyday. Learning centers can help make this challenge less daunting!
I'm a 1st/2nd grade ESL teacher in an urban public school.
I will be teaching the same group of kids this school year because I looped with my class. All of my students are native Spanish speakers who enjoy speaking and using their native language in and out of school. Even though most of my instruction is done in English, I strive to instill the importance of being biliterate in my students. One of my goals as an ESL teacher is to help my students move towards becoming proficient readers, writers and speakers of the English language, but I still want them to maintain and love their native language.
My students come to school everyday eager to learn and discover new things. They enjoy researching and collaborating with one another on topics across all subject areas. The learning centers will provide more peer interaction time because many of the centers require two or more players, and consequently this will also allow my students to help one another learn and practice their English.
My Project
One of my goals this school year is to incorporate more learning centers that are interactive and engaging into my literacy block! The learning centers I'm asking for will help reinforce the weekly word work that takes place in my classroom, and they will also help my students develop turn-taking, problem-solving, and language skills. In addition to the learning centers, the desktop easel will be used to model word work and decoding strategies during small word work groups and guided reading.
My students would really benefit a lot from these learning centers because they will provide them with opportunities to practice, develop, and manipulate their second language. All of the learning centers are educational and hands-on, which will make learning English more exciting and fun. Research shows that ELLs benefit a lot from instruction and learning experiences that incorporate dialogue, interaction, and visual/ kinesthetic input, which are all components of the literacy learning centers!
Learning centers will help my students augment their phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and spelling skills.
They will utilize the skills they acquire from the learning centers as they continue their journey of learning a second language!
