This year I took on the role of a high school counselor after being an intervention specialist for the last six years. I am so passionate about my new position as our district strives to meet the social-emotional needs of our students.
In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students.
More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn and succeed. My goal is to set them up to be mindful, independent, contributing members to society.
My Project
There's not a day that goes by that my students aren't coming to me asking to borrow a laptop. I have one Chromebook to allow my students to borrow when theirs is broken, on low battery, or when they leave their charger at home. In today's classrooms, bringing a device to class is as essential as bringing a pencil. When students do not have a reliable device, they are unable to complete their assignments.
This laptop would also be a reliable device to help track grades and monitor student success!
Students often ask me to help them access their grades. With this laptop readily available, I can quickly instruct our students on how to do this independently.
Additionally, Chromebooks do not give students the ability to access programs like Microsoft Word or the Cricut software. As a counselor, I am constantly helping students creating signs of positivity around the school or projects that involve using the Cricut. Chromebooks do not allow all software to be downloaded. Therefore, the Acer laptop would be essential to allow us to complete these tasks quickly and easily.
This laptop will enable not only my students access to these programs but myself as well. I can bring it home to prepare lessons, write letters of recommendation, track data, etc.
