Learning to sew is now a possibility at our school! This year our middle school students can sign up for the "Creativity and Collaboration- Wearable Art" class and learn to become designers.
We are a refugee magnet with students coming form all over the world - over 90 countries, speaking over 50 languages.
In visual art class students of all language abilities express themselves visually while learning English. Since many of the students lived in refugee camps, they have little to no experience with art media. They love art class and the opportunity it gives them to say in artworks what they can not yet say in words.
Our school is 96% free and reduced lunch yet our students have achieved high growth academically for the past five years.
My Project
Last year, generous donors funded 4 sewing machines for the visual art classroom and our sewing program got underway. The students made a fiber installation from fabric they designed with batik and their work took "Best of Show" at the citywide art show.
We are ready for more creative sewing. This year, the students want to use their sewing skills as fashion designers. We need scissors, cutting boards, rotary cutters, and pins to make that possible. Students will use the tools to design wearable artworks as they learn to measure, design, cut, sew and embellish simple garments.
My students will have the unique opportunity to learn to sew and become designers.
The tools requested will help them make clothing that is wearable and also artistic. Donations to this project will offer opportunity for artistic exploration, self-confidence and possibly a career path for our students for years to come.
