This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are loving, curious, patient, inclusive, forgiving, kind, and eager little people. My students are very hard-working, school-loving first graders. They love school so much! A parent in my class told me about a student who did not understand why Saturday was a day off. After the first week of school, the student insisted she be taken to school to learn and play on Saturday.

My students are diverse learners!

Some of them are bilingual and trilingual, some of them are imaginative creators, some of them are studious, and some are social leaders. They come to school with different abilities and different home living situations. However, when we are in the classroom they all understand the value of a community and can tell you that in our class we collaborate because we are stronger together.

My Project

We have four modules throughout the school year where we learn about different topics. This March, we will begin our module on birds. Students will learn how to use books to close read and research information. Unfortunately, our school district did not provide enough texts for each student to have access to a text.

To learn to research from a book, students need a book in their hands.

When students have had their hands on the text during previous modules it has made a tremendous difference to their learning. Students will be learning how to navigate a nonfiction text using a table of contents. They will learn how to take notes from a text and use those notes to write about birds.
