My students live in the hills of the Eldorado National Forest. The town is an old California “gold rush” town named after the placer gold deposits found in its’ river beds and hills in the late 1840’s. My students go to a Title I school with the majority of them receiving free or reduced price lunch. The school is about 30 minutes from the nearest freeway, and is truly a hidden gem.
My students are faced with the challenge of learning in an environment that is catching up with 21st century standards and resources.
Our district is very small and is very family and community oriented. The principal, teachers and families all work together to help students learn to their fullest potential.
My Project
Studies show that targeted reading intervention in primary grades can make a big difference in students' literacy. Students grades K-2nd at my school currently have no consistent reading assessment across grade levels. Each teacher administers his or her own assessment, which leaves a discrepancy between classrooms and students academic levels. The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment is an “accurate and reliable tool to identify the instructional and independent reading levels of all students and document student progress through one-on-one formative and summative assessments.” By providing a tool used across grade levels, teachers can provide adequate support to readers of all levels.
