Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eighty-five percent of my students are new to the United Sates from countries like Africa, El Salvador, Syria and many more. Many of their parents work long hours and have very little time to support them. As a product of immigrant parents from Haiti myself, I am passionate about teaching them to read. Over 75% of my students are reading way below level and I feel strongly about changing this. At this point, academically speaking I feel like I am one of the few hopes they have and I would like to extend whatever is in my power to add to their academic development.
My Project
This material is strategically designed to help low performing students see success in a matter of four weeks. The books are phonetically based and students practice the English rules as they read.
The school year is coming to and end and it would be tragic to have my precious students leave the year without the essential tools needed for the first grade.
Each week I struggle to find common books for my small group guided reading lessons. The five sets will allow me to teach students in increments of five students and move them up quickly.
