My students need 6 iPods to be used as tangible incentives for excellence in academic achievement.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sometimes even the most self-motivated students do well with additional encouragement. Students who are achieving in school can be motivated further by tangible rewards.
Our school is a middle school for students in 6 to 8th grade located in southern California.
We are unique in that our ethnic makeup of students is diverse. Students come from various parts of Asia and Latin America and because of the diversity there is an amazing meld of cultures. We are fortunate to be in a place where we can learn many different things from each other.
My Project
I would like to offer these 6 iPods as an incentive for students who are achieving in the top percentages of their grade levels. I would like for students who may not have earned a prize in one semester, see the potential and put forth the effort to be eligible the following semester. Although I believe that learning should be a reward in and of itself, sometimes students need extrinsic rewards to get to that point. I hope that by having the opportunity to earn something that every middle school student can use, that they are taking the steps necessary to make learning an intrinsically motivated goal.
The students who have the highest GPA at the end of the semester will be awarded the iPods. They earn the highest GPA and can keep track of their status through monthly grades their teachers give them. If there is a tie for the top spots to earn the iPods the counselors can look at those students' past semester grades to determine who has had the highest grades.
Although there are only 6 iPods to reward students, those 6 students will have friends and word will spread to other students about the incentives to do well in school.
I also feel that by offering these incentives, the students who earn them will continue to do well in school.
