My Students

"We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics." ~Katherine Johnson

My students have a great love for learning and exploration of new ideas, especially those that relate to STEM.

They come from diverse backgrounds and have many different learning styles, strengths, and needs. They learn best when they are able to explore and create their own learning through engaging experiences. The more excited they become about a project or topic, the more they are able to gain from it.

Our Title I school is located in a rural town and we are a very close-knit community. Many of the families at our school have been in the district for generations.

My Project

My 5th and 6th grade students diligently work toward mastery of the grade level standards required of them as well as make growth to meet their own personal goals every day. Each Friday, they are given the opportunity to have Free Choice Friday time if all of their work is complete for the week. I would love to add this Kano Computer Kit and Workbook to our Free Choice Friday games and activities as it would motivate my students to work hard and do their best all week.

The Kano Computer Kit would be a hands-on activity that ignites students’ curiosity, while enhancing their skills in science, engineering, technology, and coding.

The kit would not only allow them to build their own computer, but they would learn to code with 100's of creative challenges and stories as well as make art, games, and music. With easy-to-follow directions, DK Workbooks: Raspberry Pi Projects helps kids understand the basics of computers, programming, and how to create coding projects. Computer coding teaches kids how to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically, and is quickly becoming a necessary and sought-after skill. This kit would inspire curiosity and creativity, but it would also foster collaboration among the students as they work together to build and create. It is always so amazing to watch the students working on projects like these because they get so excited and have such a wondrous light in their eyes.

Thank you for any support you can give to this project and to my students. These materials will be enjoyed for years to come!
