This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 24 of the most amazing first-grade students! My students are inquisitive thinkers who always want to learn more about the world around them. They are very enthusiastic about learning and always strive to give their best! Our school is located in a high poverty area of the city. The majority of our students qualify for a free or reduced-price school meal program. Due to economic hardships, my students have limited supplies and resources. As their teacher, I want to provide them with a highly engaging and motivating learning experience.
My Project
Sight words account for a large percentage (50-75%) of words in books. Young children learning to read frequently struggle with these sight words. SnapWord cards is a fun and engaging resource to assist all types of learners. It provides a great way to get students interested in learning their sight words. By using these cards with my students, they will learn their sight words through different modalities. Each card provides a visual picture of the word, has a motion that corresponds to the word and students listen to how it is used in a sentence. Through this dynamic approach, students have a better understanding and grasp of their sight words. During this time of distant learning having SnapWord cards would be an asset for small group instruction on Zoom. Teaching with these cards and strategies would be highly effective in all students learning their sight words.
