Learn Math (and Have Fun)

We need 2 Amazon Fire tablet computers, covers, and stylus for a "Math Game Station" in our Liberal Arts Math class. A lot of kids would like to learn math the fun way!

About My Students

Vanessa and Brandy are two students in my Liberal Arts Math class who are leading this project. They feel strongly that math would be fun IF ONLY we could play some games while we learn it. This is their proposal to start a GAMES station, where students will play a rotation of online math games.

I recently purchased an Amazon FIRE tablet through Donors Choose, and a couple of students tried out a math app called "Motion Math". They were enthralled. Most students in this class have a smart phone of some kind but about 20% do not. If we have a couple more Amazon FIRE tablets, we will be able to include a MATH GAMES station in our Liberal Arts class twice a week, during which students will rotate in to the station and play games to increase their basic understanding of math (multiplication, division, fractions, and basic algebra). My students decided that we need more Amazon FIRE tablets so that this station could be a regular rotation in our classroom. It is so rare that we see enthusiasm in high school math, that I felt this was a project idea that should be funded and realized.

This project will help students feel like they are empowered to effect a positive change in the math classroom by suggesting and implementing a twice-a-week station in an ESE (exceptional student education) classroom. They understand that they need to start small with the station, with no more than four players at a time, and build on their successes by requesting additional tablets if the demand arises. They have researched the costs of their proposal and are excited by the prospect of learning while having fun. I think this is a great way to give them what they want while they are learning what we want them to learn.

In Their Own Words

OK, we are trying to make more kids in our class excited about math! We have to take and pass the Algebra 1 benchmark (the Algebra 1 EOC or FSA in Florida), and it is usually pretty boring to do worksheets or watch videos about math. So, we want to practice skills using some on-line math apps like MOTION MATH to learn some basics like multiplication and fractions. This project might not work for every kid, but we think it will work for many who don't care right now if they learn or not.

We are going to be station leaders in this class. Which means we will make sure the students take care of the tablets and login so they can be tracked by the teacher and their learning gains will be tracked also. Our teacher is always encouraging us to learn on our own, and this is one way we think we can help students learn on their own. It might not work for everyone, but we think there are lots of kids who want to have fun with games, and this is a great way to learn math at the same time.

One of the problems is that students are bored with the regular curriculum and want to try some new stuff with technology. So I think they could do some games with math and maybe they will feel like it is fun in class to do math. My name is Vanessa, and I like to play video games so I think other students will like it too. Plus, we took a vote in class, and this was the winning project out of three ideas. So, I hope you will help us make this project work for us. Thank you.
