Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher working with 6-12 preschool students diagnosed with autism, sensory processing disorder, speech and language delay and multiple-handicaps with low cognitive skills. As a result of schools shutting down physical buildings, I have been seeing my students via video streaming sessions. Some of my students are non-speaking or have limited speech. However, that does not hinder them to reach their best potential in participating with the use of personalized hands-on materials and basic supplies.
My goal is to provide an online classroom for my students that is welcoming, exciting, engaging and offers opportunities for exploration, and prepares my students for future academic success.
My students are lacking these hands-on resources in their homes, and I would like to provide them a fun and engaging learning tool boxes this coming distance learning school year of 2020-2021.
My Project
Help me give my students individualized and engaging hands-on learning tool boxes. Colorful paints, paint brushes, play-dough, plastic animal toys are some of the items that my students would like to have in their tool boxes for the distance learning school year. This will not only help our students at their homes but also make them engaged through hands-on materials in promoting independence, increase fine motor development but also build feelings of competence which will support them and encourage persistence as they grow and mature. Through these hands-on activities, children can improve both their cognitive and social emotional skills without frustration or boredom.
My students do not have art supplies at home and are unable to afford these items.
Giving my students the right supplies and materials will help my students get excited and become interested in what they are learning. This will give them what they need to express their thoughts and feelings as well as build their literacy knowledge. Exploration and engaging activities are the key to keep their attention, having the freedom to explore and create providing rich learning experiences for these young learners.
Whether it is painting their pictures or using their imaginations in creating something or molding clay to create their favorite character from the story that was just read, these materials will help provide similar experiences they would have had in the classroom and create a love of learning.
