My students need breakfast and snacks to help them succeed in school.

My Students
I teach Algebra and Geometry to a group of students that all have IEPs with emotional disabilities. The students academic abilities and behaviors range greatly. Some students have severe anxiety while others act out regularly. Some students can participate in grade level material while some can barely read.
For the most part, our students have very unstable home lives.
Many of them live with their grandparents, in group homes, with foster parents, and have DCF involvement. Every day brings new challenges to each student. Many of them come from homes that lack basic items including food and clothes.
Although many students ultimately decide that high school is not for them, some do persevere and earn their diploma. Some even continue on to college. They return with stories of jobs, families and life experiences.
My Project
Students in our program frequently come to school without having eaten breakfast. Many have trouble with transportation and come in late. By the time they get to school, they are expected to learn but are coming in late and hungry.
Students simply cannot learn and succeed in school on an empty stomach.
A breakfast with some snacks later in the morning always helps motivates students to become more active and engaged throughout their school day.
Our program rewards students with food based on their academic and social successes. Positive reinforcement helps encourage students to be better students and citizens at Lowell High School.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
