My students need a space where they can come together to play and learn. This rug will give them boundaries as they learn about personal space and how to interact socially.
Our school is in close proximity to the Research Triangle Park. This means the backgrounds are various and the students tend to be very transient. We have a community outreach called The Mobile Food Pantry. We have a group of parents who go to various stores and restaurants and collect donations of food and other items such as clothing. Once a month on Saturday families come to our school to pick up bags of groceries to help them make ends meet. We also deliver meals on holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving to families in need. During the summer entire neighborhoods are given breakfast and lunch because we know that sometimes when students are not in school they don't have enough food.
My students are a wonderful mix of cultures, backgrounds, abilities and personalities.
They come in every morning ready to learn and explore. I could not be more proud of the effort they make every day to learn and the progress I see every day as they grow academically, socially and emotionally.
My Project
This Alphabet Activity Carpet will help my Kindergarten students learn how to respect other students' boundaries and personal space. It will give me a starting point to tell them where to sit and what space is their space and what space is another student's space.
This specific rug will also help my students learn their letters in the beginning of the year.
The pictures will also help my non English speaking students learn their letters.
When I call students to the carpet, I can tell them a specific letter to find and sit on. I can tell the ESL students to find the picture and then identify the letter. While on the carpet I can use the letters to remind them of their personal space.
