I am a third grade teacher at New Field Elementary School in Chicago. I teach in an inclusion classroom, which consists of special needs students along with regular education students. Each year I love to involve the students in literacy learning centers. This center time allows students to work in small groups in order to strengthen their reading skills. It also provides me with the opportunity to meet with a student one-on-one, and get a sense of how that student is progressing. I have observed classrooms using LeapPads from the LeapFrog Company during center time. These LeapPads involve students in reading stories and interesting informational selections independently. This product would enable my students to get immediate and individual feedback while reading, and would provide an activity that each student could work on independently during our center time. I strongly feel that my special needs students would benefit from using these LeapPads, since each student is working at a level and speed that he/she is comfortable with. If I was able to bring six LeapPads in my classroom, I would be able to create a LeapPad center to engage students in during our literacy time. I believe that this would be a center my students would not only be excited about, but also truly engaged in as we continue towards our goal of becoming lifelong readers.
