Leaping Language Barriers in a Single Bound!

My students need computers to assist them in translation and fluency. My English language learners have so many challenges; these computers will help them be more successful!

My Students

My middle school students represent many different backgrounds, ability levels, languages, and cultures. Approximately 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The diversity in our school provides rich learning potential, and my students are eager for new challenges.

Particularly, my ELL students, who face more challenges than most, demonstrate a tremendous amount of grit on a daily basis. These students come from families which speak Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Arabic, and Korean. They represent many different levels of progress, from students who are very new to our country, to those who have succeeded in becoming nearly fluent in a few short years.

My Project

The use of translation and dual-language software is immeasurably helpful for English language learners who are trying to master a content area like mathematics. In my classroom currently, I have a few computers, which do assist my students in groups. However, they are currently using them with approximately a 4:1 student to computer ratio. While it is better than having no computers, I am noticing that some students who could be working at a faster pace are often held back by the need to share technology.

Every one of my students, including those who are faced with the extra challenge of learning a new language, deserve to make progress at a pace that makes sense for him/her, and not be held back by the lack of access to technology.
