Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of my students have not yet grasped the concepts and skills necessary to become lifelong readers and writers. Learning the alphabet and the letter sounds are often difficult for them...even frustrating to the point of tears. Unfortunately, they enter first grade already feeling like failure.
I teach in an urban school district in New Jersey.
My students are at-risk in many ways. Many of them come from homes where Spanish is the home language. They share homes with several families and are not used to having many belongings of their own. All of my students typically receive free or reduced lunch and the cards are already stacked against them...until they come to school, that is. When they enter my classroom, they come into a positive and exciting learning environment encountering teachers who believe in them and know that they can learn if given the opportunity. My first graders love new experiences and accept the challenge of learning new things. They are eager to take risks and try new things. Often, though, they are easily frustrated but don't know what it's like to have somebody truly believe in them.
My Project
I am requesting three iPad Mini tablets with cases for my classroom. These tablets will be used on a daily basis to help my students reinforce skills they need to be successful in their academic career. The tablets will be used in different ways for different students - some students will use them to reinforce skills necessary to begin reading, such as practicing letters and letter sounds. Other students will use the tablets to read books at their independent levels. The tablets will also be loaded with math games so that students can reinforce the concepts taught during math time. I truly envision these tablets making a difference in my classroom. I imagine that they will motivate the students to learn. Students who are not likely to pick up a book will not want to put them down when reading them on these devices. I believe that the iPad tablets with raise the bar and my students will work harder in all areas just to have the opportunity to use the tablets.
