Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title 1 school where over 80% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Being a Title 1 schools dictates that many of our funds be allocated to essential classroom materials necessary for our core subject areas, leaving little room for the ancillary instructional materials independent learning activities.
Verbal and mental literacy skills are vital to the academic growth and development of Kindergarten students. By implementing literacy centers, my students, including our Hispanic and non-English speaking students can participate in both student and teacher led activities. Literacy centers allow my assistant and I to interact with students one on one and focus on their needs. It also allows for authentic assessment in a low pressure setting.
With the gift of the literacy center materials, I can provide more opportunities for my students to be engaged and excited about learning. Many of my students begin school less prepared than their peers and I want to provide them with a solid, literacy rich foundation that meets their needs. The literacy center activities requested provide three types of activities, beginning sounds, ending sounds, and rhyming words, which can be used throughout the year and allow for differentiated instruction so that students can work at their own pace at their academic level.
We are a Kindergarten room full of active boys and girls! Hop along and help us leap into literacy centers!
