Hello! My students this year are "older" elementary school children, ranging from 9-13 years old. All of my students are autistic, and most are nonverbal.
Educational Technology that grabs a student's attention can be extremely motivating; it's so much fun they don't realize they are learning!
Although most of my students can not work independently, they react well to devices that are colorful and have movement. As we work together, I can see that they love the music, color and motion of the educational apps. A device like the LeapFrog LeapPad teaches a child the cause and effect of their actions. They learn to not just watch, but to interact with what they are seeing.
All of my students are learning to take care of their personal care needs and daily living skills. They are learning how to be safe in their homes and in the community. We practice how to be a good friend and how to help each other. There are great educational apps that help support these learning goals.
My Project
Special Education students are always playing catch-up with children their own age. Most children nowadays are technology experts. Special students want to feel that success and independence, as well.
LeapPad will give the struggling child a feeling of accomplishment when other students are running circles around them with more advanced technology devices.
Having a device that is self-contained and does not involve getting and staying attached to WiFi will be an easier device for the very early technology learner. A child that cannot navigate the internet independently gets very frustrated when he touches something that leads to a screen he doesn't understand and requires more knowledge to get out of. The fact that the LeapPad comes pre-loaded with hand-selected child safe apps is a real bonus! This allows the child to navigate and experiment with success.
