Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Not only do the students face the socio-economic challenge along with other challenges, but 75% of them face the academic challenge of learning to listen, read, write, and understand in a language that is not the primary language in their homes.
My children attend a title 1 school where 97% of the kids are on free and reduced lunch.
75% of the class speaks only Spanish at home, so getting help on homework or reading with someone is nearly impossible. My children love to learn but because they have a difficult time finding reading materials that they understand and can use independently makes them frustrated.
My Project
The LeapFrog Tags are probably the greatest invention that LeapFrog has created in years. They allow the children to learn difficult vocabulary and allows the students the opportunity to have the entire story read to them, word-by-word readings, or sound-by-sound. This will help the students who are just learning English in second grade, but also the students who are nearly reading. It will help my students learn confidence and to believe that they can be readers without the worry and struggle of understanding if they heard someone correctly.
My children will have the chance to read!
Reading and learning to read in a language that they only speak at school is very difficult. The school day is the only opportunity for some of the students to read and learn English, on top of the fact that they have to learn content too. This will make their lives a little easier and a little more fun.
