I teach Kindergarten at a school which is 94% minority and 94% free and reduced lunch. The students I teach come to Kindergarten with little exposure to books and literacy, and delays in language development. I need to begin early intervention for my students in order for them to catch up to other students whose parents have been able to afford books and other experiences for them. This is necessary for my students to meet state instructional goals and to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Legislation.
I am a highly qualified teacher with a Masters in Reading and certification as a Reading specialist. I have the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to provide early intervention for these students. In order to accomplish this, my students need books for classroom use. I wish to acquire multiple sets of Leveled Readers from The Wright Group Publishers to use in guided reading groups and in shared reading in order to differentiate instruction for their varying needs. My students also need big books to support their learning about book and print awareness and to foster a love of reading. My class of 17 students will participate in this project. This project will benefit them by providing a literacy-rich environment and the experiences with books they need to reach profiency in Reading by the end of the school year.
I want to provide early intervention for my students, to help bridge the gap between minority and non-minority students and so that no child in my class will be left behind. I want my students to have the best possible start to their literacy education and to be ready for the challenges of first grade. It is less costly and easier to provide early intervention than remediation in the later grades. With my background as a reading teacher, I know that I have the skills and knowledge to provide this intervention for my students and to move them along quickly. I have a firm commitment that no child will be left behind in my class because of their background or socioeconomic status. With appropriate materials, I will be able to provide this experience for my students.
