I am the proud teacher of 24 full-day kindergarten students from a Chicago Public School. These students come from low income families and a strict school budget. I am doing my best to create a classroom full of literacy. I am currently seeking your help to help expand our Phonics Center. I have purchased some materials on my own but I simply cannot do it alone. Students learn early reading skills in kindergarten. It is my goal to have my students sounding out three to four letter words by the end of the school year. My students have learned to identify letters and their sounds and are now ready to begin combining the sounds to form words. The materials I am requesting will all be used for this Phonics Center. We will use these materials during whole group instruction as well as for a small group activity. These materials are colorful, attractive, and will capture their attention. I would like to see my students take what they have learned from the large group instruction into their small groups and work independently in the Phonics Center. The skills they will be learning include: matching letters to beginning sounds, middle sounds, ending sounds, identifying the correct vowel sound, and putting these sounds together to form words. Once these children can do this, they are well on their way to forming sentences and eventually short stories. Please help me make this center possible for these young children. We are at a stage in our learning where these materials would be greatly appreciated in the month of January. Thank you so much for your time and generosity.
