I have the great fortune to work with 20 of some of the most courageous and endearing students. My students come to me daily from their general education classrooms, kindergarten through sixth grade, in order to receive support with academics, organizational skills and social/emotional skills. These children have all been identified as having educational disabilities. These disabilities include specific learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder and emotional disabilities.
Many of the typical expectations and demands of school can be overwhelming challenges for my students.
Students that I work with struggle to make and maintain friendships and respond appropriately to conflicts for a variety of reasons. Many of them are working hard toward social competence and emotional self-regulation but aren't there yet. Building these skills contribute to emotional health, positive friendships and academic success.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will benefit my students in so many ways. The books will provide me with ways to introduce a variety of social situations that challenge my students and give them opportunities to see that they are not the only ones that are struggling to figure out their emotions and how to be a friend. The games and activities will allow us to explore and practice social and emotional skills. The fidgets and comfies become tools to help students regulate their emotions and comfort themselves when classroom and social situations become stressful.
When students learn how to regulate their emotions and develop social skills, they have positive experiences with peers and feel like they belong.
When their social and emotional needs are met, they are more likely to take risks in learning, make progress academically and flourish at school.
