Leading With Innovation

My Students

All my students are highly motivated by Project Based Learning. They like to be innovative problem solvers and want to design, create and build using their hands and technology. For the last four years we have been integrating STEM, and 21st Century Skills concepts throughout our classes and building a Modeling and Simulation choice elective program. We like to call our STEM program, “STEAM for All”! We believe that STEM is having a positive impact upon our students learning gains and the Modeling and Simulation curriculum is preparing them for jobs that will exist 10 to 20 years from now.

My Project

It is time to replace our 5 year old MakerBot, which I can only describe as one of the first prototypes. The new models work much more efficiently with more fidelity. We have used our printer to build components and prototypes for many projects over the years. For one particular project, the students designed and printed a miniature drive shaft to connect a rotisserie motor to a large gear we cut out of thin plywood to make it spin for our M&S Florida State Fair Exhibit.

Creating a 3D Physical Model or bringing a concept to life with a 3D printer is a foundation of Modeling and Simulation.

As our "STEAM for All" theme expands through out other curriculum's at Monroe the need for a more reliable and faster 3D printer is increasing. Currently we are designing and building STEAM themed trophies, where many of the components can be printed with a 3D printer as well as printing custom designed guitar pics by the guitar class students!
