Did you love reading as a kid? I was a self-described book worm. My time spent reading directly reflects my academic achievements throughout my education and into college. As a teacher, I want to give the next generation all the opportunities to succeed beginning with a love of literacy.
My class is full of amazing little learners with their own reading abilities and interests.
They shop the classroom library each morning and crave recommendations based off their friends' opinions. Read to Self and Shop the Media Center are easily their two favorite reading centers. Our independent reading time is our most precious and prioritized part of the entire day!
My Project
When students have a great choice in their reading options then there is an opportunity to create a deeper intrinsic reading motivation. These books will add to our classroom library and further the educational gains my low-economic students can make.
My students crave new books and welcome any time they can share a recommendation to a friend.
As a teacher, those moments make me feel as if I am preparing them to become life-long readers.
I know the impact that reading can have upon academic gains. Since teaching at a low-income school I've realized the drastic, urgent need to give my students every advantage they can have for the life ahead of them.
