This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty elementary school with about 700 students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status.
My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
About half of them are English Language Learners. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.
My Project
In my class, we use whiteboards on a daily basis, especially during our math instruction. The whiteboards allow my students to record their thinking and solve math problems. They provide and easy place for them to show and share their work. The white boards allow me to see my students' mathematical thinking, to see who understands the concept they are learning, as well as misconceptions they may have. What becomes a problem is the fact that the markers never seem to last, erasers get lost, and the whiteboards slowly become permanently stained from frequent use. Oftentimes, it is in the middle of the lesson when a student's marker needs to be replaced causing an interruption or distraction to our math lesson. During distance learning, it has been challenging getting them a new marker in a timely manner since the school supplies distribution at the school becomes a large task to organize.
By having LCD tablets, student will be able to avoid all of the problems and inconveniences that come with the use of whiteboards and focus on improving their learning!
Your donation will not only help increase student engagement and focus, but you will also help to increase their academic achievement.
Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are in good working conditions. In addition, in this technology literate world, any interaction that students can have with updated technology will provide them with the necessary 21st century skills!
