My students need these books about famous artists, like "Dorothea Lange: The Photographer Who Found the Faces of the Depression" in order to build an understanding of the artist's life to enhance our fine arts curriculum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in its fourth year of operation. We are located in a rural area where our school is a "work of art." Our students love the modern finishes of our school along with the natural light sources.
My classroom is a group of thirty amazing students, eager to grow as individuals, artists, and learners.
At school, most students feel the push for growth in academics, but my goal is to push my students to succeed as artists, too. Not only are we focusing on the academic language, but we want students to develop the understanding of famous artists and their creations.
My Project
Las Brisas Academy is the newest elementary in a growing portfolio of World Class Schools in the Liberty Elementary School District. Las Brisas expands Liberty's offerings and provides opportunities for students in the areas of Visual/Performing Arts.
Albert Einstein once said, "It is the true art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." It is our belief that when we provide students with experiences and programs that help to awaken their creative expressions, we can only further enhance their knowledge.
In addition to building a character program, I also hope to develop an "Artist of the Trimester" for my fourth grade students. Initially this project was submitted as a West Side Impact grant, but we did not get accepted due to not aligning to standards. We feel that although these are not linked to a specific academic standard, they will enhance our students creative expression, which will help them build characteristics that will make them successful in the future. Innovation/Problem Solving is a much needed trait in today's workforce, and we feel that a love for art will foster this development.
Each month, students will focus on two famous artists. We will watch an episode of Mati and Dada, and then we read a book about the artists past and works of art. Lastly, we will create art inspired by that artist. Students will show their "mastery" through a journal entry, using key vocabulary from that art modality, posing as the artist themselves. Students will act as the artist, explaining why their work should be placed in the art museum. Students will host an art show with their works of art through these famous artists along with their work created in the art room.
