My Project
I teach early childhood students, ages 3–5, in a reverse mainstream classroom. This means some of my students are typically developing, while others have a variety of developmental needs. Each child brings their own strengths, learning styles, and challenges to our classroom. They are joyful, curious, and full of potential—and they benefit greatly from structured, engaging, and inclusive instruction.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program is a daily, research-based resource that builds critical pre-reading skills like rhyming, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds.
These skills are essential for young learners as they prepare for reading and writing.
The program is designed to be short and effective—just 10–12 minutes per day—and easily integrates into our circle time routine. It uses repetition, movement, and auditory learning strategies that work well for both typically developing children and those with special needs.
Early intervention is key, and phonemic awareness is one of the strongest predictors of future reading success. Many of my students need explicit and consistent instruction in these foundational skills. Heggerty provides that in a way that is fun, developmentally appropriate, and accessible to a wide range of learners.
With your support, I can provide my students with the tools they need to develop strong language and literacy skills that will set them up for success in kindergarten and beyond.
