This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high-poverty area in Virginia; my school is small, with about 350 children enrolled. The children in my building are great kids; they thrive off positive motivation and are very intuitive when focused. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006.
Currently, I am a Second grade teacher; I love teaching Second grade simply because kids are fun to teach at this level.
They are enthusiastic, happy to be at school, work together well, and they are the perfect mixture of independence and neediness in behavior and attitude!
They make me WANT to come to work :-)
My Project
Carpets make any classroom look cozy and appealing but they also go through it every year. They encounter dirty shoe soles, glue and hand sanitizer spills, and food crumbs during snack time. Additionally, I like my kids to have their own space; I want them to be able to spread out comfortably while working in Reader's Workshop or other learning stations.
I would like a new large rug because it will kill THREE birds with one stone: I can get rid of my old, stained carpet; Its' width will ensure my kids have space to spread out while working; the rug itself will be used as an instructional tool because I can use the letters, colors, and shapes printed on it to quick check what my kids know.
Along with a fresh rug, I am asking for WhisperPhones for the kids to use while in Reader's Workshop. WhisperPhones allow a child to read to herself without disturbing her neighbors or other groups; it promotes fluency and awareness because they can hear what they are reading and can check themselves for accuracy. They really look like a phone, too, which I know my kids will get a kick out of!
Your donation will ensure that I am providing a healthy and inviting environment wherein to teach my children. You will make it possible for a common classroom item, a rug, to be so much more-a learning tool. Thank you for your help-we appreciate it!
