Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, and engaging learning activities. They walk into our classroom each day eager to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. I ask them, "Who is the best kindergarten class in the whole world?", and they reply, "We are!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything. I work very hard to create a school family where all of my students feel loved, safe, and connected.
I teach at a Title I school in Arkansas with a 68% reported poverty rate.
They come from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, home situations, and many of them are English language learners. I have several students who come to me not knowing the entry level skills of kindergarten.
My Project
Kindergarten students naturally want to play and use their imagination. They all love the idea of castles and knights and enjoy listening to fairy tales. We read several stories each school year that the students become very familiar with. For example, one of the all time favorites of my students is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I know they will love getting to play with these new Storytime Toys: Hansel and Gretel Toy House and Storybook Playset, The Three Little Pigs Toy House and Storybook Playset, Goldielocks and the Three Bears Fairytale Dollhouse and Book. These materials will provide engaging, hands on opportunities for them to practice retelling these familiar stories, in addition to, creating new stories using their imagination, all while helping to enhance their oral language.
Oral language development in young learners plays a critical role in later reading comprehension success.
It is important that I give my students the chance to explore and expand their oral language through play and these new Storytime Toys will allow me to do just that.
