The use of vertical non-permanent surfaces in the classroom is a great way to increase student engagement. Some of my students enjoy working together in pairs and tackling a question and/or problem, but sometimes the quiet ones or the antsy ones are not really involved. When you add a non-permanent surface into the equation, the activity just gets more exciting. When you add a vertical non-permanent surface and my students get to stand, the engagement gets even better. The boards are visible so students can get ideas from one another, which emphasizes the idea that other people have great ideas as well. The goal is to use these boards to learn math in a way that helps students do, think, and learn (their own thinking or inspiration from someone else) while having fun and being engaged.
By supporting this project, you will help my students become more engaged thinkers, who will be better problem solvers in the future.
The boards will give my students an opportunity to think about and learn math in a different way while learning to work with their peers. A way that I hope will help them actually "learn" math, instead of just mimicking what I tell them, or repeatedly applying a rule. The non-permanent surface is a safe space where they can try different ideas. Since the surface is upright, they need to stand in order to write on it; this helps with the students who need to move around. Though I have not been able to use these surfaces regularly, I've seen some positive results when I have been able to use them. These boards will enhance my classroom to be a "thinking classroom" to support thinking caring citizens for the future!
