The children in my classroom are 4 years old and for many this is their first experience in school. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they participate in the classroom for the first time is priceless! Our school is a Great Start Readiness Program which is a state funded program for children who are at risk. Our goal is to provide children with a strong foundation in academics and social skills to be successful inside and outside of school.
My preschool class is comprised of 16 amazing students, all of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
Providing my students with opportunities and experiences they may not be able to participate in at home is essential to prepare them for later school experiences.
My Project
Teaching early literacy skills and habits is a huge focus in my preschool classroom. As I work on preparing the children for Kindergarten and beyond we talk about the importance of reading, recognizing letters, and the sounds letters make. Another large focus is fostering independence in my young students and providing them with opportunities to learn self help skills.
Providing a listening center with headphones and audio books for children to read together will foster academic and social emotional growth.
Children will be able to listen and follow along with the text as the story is read to them; allowing for recognition of familiar letters and words. The ability to provide space for five students using the headphone jack splitter will encourage social interaction and problem solving as children work together to choose a book to read and operate the CD player.
