Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a TK-8 school in the heart of East Oakland, opened after a design team of educators, parents, and community members spent a year re-envisioning the school’s mission.
Our current students have significant social and emotional needs, stemming from indirect and direct trauma they have experienced.
Our student population is 82% Latino and 15% African American and a growing number of students from Southeast Asian and the Middle East. 98% of our students identify as low income (from the current SPF snapshot).
Our school will start a Dual Language program in Kindergarten next year. This will be the first generation of bilingual and biliterate students in our community.
These students are going to be pioneers over the years to develop the dual language program in our school. As they participate in our program, they will show cross-cultural competency, the ability to interact with a variety of people, across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and collaborate successfully.
They will graduate proficient in both languages, thus increasing their opportunities to enter college and embark on a successful career.
They will also engage in multiple leadership opportunities each year that will support them becoming social change agent as adults.
My Project
We need technology to be able to develop a Personalized Instruction.
Personalized Instruction will be a key component part of our change in instructional strategies.
By using personalized learning platforms, we will be able to fully maximize the learning potential of all of our students, no matter what their level.
We will pilot platforms that are flexible for our dual language environment. One of the key benefits of the personalized learning is that students will be able to set goals for their performance in the personalized environment. In addition, we will pilot curriculum that allows students to continue with their learning at home.
For our Kindergarteners, this means that they will be using Chromebooks with instructional games set at their own level, that the teacher will be able to monitor and adapt as they improve their learning.
