Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are ingenious, innovative, artistic, athletic, curious, talented, funny, risk takers, goal driven pathfinders. They thrive everyday to become experts in their areas of interest: sports, Spanish, English, Biology, Music Band, Mathematics, Physics, Art, Astronomy, History, Cooking, Agriculture and Architecture. They set foot in their school looking forward to positive experiences with each other and the subject they are learning. My students take on the challenges with courage, creativity, and an open mind and participate in debates, cooperative group discussions, study groups, presentations, research projects and restorative justice activities.

My students are leaders involved in an array of events to better their school community.

They organize, plan, perform cultural events such as,"5 de Mayo," "Dia de los Muertos," "African American Heritage Month,"Cancer Awareness Month" to integrate everyone and fortify their roots within our school. My students transform their classroom and home school with beautiful murals representing their beliefs, values, dreams, heritage and love towards education. They are environmental conscious and make our school green by planting, growing and watering our school gardens and take pride on doing so. My students are empowered to make positive changes in themselves, their school, their community and the world.

My Project

In our school library, there is a limited selection and number of current Spanish novels and most of what my students read are short stories assigned within the textbook. My goal this school year is to increase the number of books and novel selections that exists within our classroom library. A large number of students will be able to check out a book and take it home to read throughout the semester.

Reading in Spanish at home will increase my students' vocabulary, sentence fluency, comprehension skills and self-confidence in the usage of the language.

Throughout the school year, my students will join Reading Circles to discuss different aspect of the novels. The reading of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho will inspire my students to search within themselves and meditate on the road they will take to reach their dreams and/or realize their personal legend. At the end of their reading, they will work on a project of self-reflection: A guide to realize one's dream based on the life lessons learned from Santiago's journey, the main character from The Alchemist.
