This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a Library Media Specialist who works with students from grades Kindergarten through 8th, that includes both general education and special education students. I see every class on a weekly basis to teach them how to be lifelong learners, readers, and leaders through book tastings, STEM activities, digital literacy, and character education. My school serves a community that is predominantly from the lower socio-economic area of Mount Vernon in Westchester county. All my students have a passion for reading and learning that I work to reinforce each day.
My Project
Our library has become a hub, not only for literacy and reading, but for STEM, and I have worked diligently over the past year and a half to ensure that every student in our building has the access and opportunity to interact with our Makerspace and engage in exciting STEM activities.
Last year, I planned, paid for, and facilitiated a Retro Video Game STEM event in our Library Media Center that every student in our building attended.
They were able to engage in activities like Mario Kart maze building, Pac Man Ozobot coding, Duck Hunt Pom Pom Launchers, and Pokemon Paper Circuits.
This year, I have planned a space-themed STEM event for our building. Students will get to select from activities like Galaxy Slime making, Galaxy Paper Circuits, a Team Docking Challenge, Galaxy in a Jar, Merge Cube Planet Exploration, and Balloon Rocket Races, amongst others! Because this event last three days and reaches every student in our building, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, there are a great deal of materials needed to ensure every student has the opportunity to participate in the activities they're interested in. This project will help fund many of the materials needed to ensure there are more activities for the students to engage in.
