My Students

"We are born makers. We move what we're learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands." ~Brene Brown Librarians facilitate construction of knowledge through access to information and technology. Students are hungry for hands-on application of knowledge through creative exploration.

"The impulse to create is one of the most basic human drives." ~Silvia Martinez The "Libratory" inventors will range in age from 7 -12.

They hale from diverse cultural, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. My students represent a wide spectrum of learning preference, as well as physical and cognitive abilities. They vary greatly in their exposure to and comfort level with technology. What they have in common is the need for collaborative problem-solving and creating opportunities. A project-based, inquiry-driven learning environment will empower all students to develop and use the skills necessary for future success in an information-based economy. The "Libratory" will serve as the community space where individual skill sets will be celebrated as hearts, minds and hands unite toward a common goal.

My Project

The "Libratory" will provide a multi-sensory, high and low-tech, collaborative learning and creating environment. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer science as they use Blockly coding language to program and interact with Dash and Dot, the "smart" robots. The littleBits Electronic Kit will provide the electronic building blocks (magnetic circuits) to create blinking, buzzing inventions. Students will brainstorm solutions for real-world problems and will be empowered with the tools to bring their ideas to life, whether from instructions or their imaginations. The Osmo Genius Kit will also help to bridge the physical and digital worlds by opening the iPad up to hands-on play. Starting with word and number games and working their way into higher level strategies, students will use unique gaming accessories, such as Tangrams, for problem solving and engaging with on-screen technology.

"If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed.

The vision pulls you." ~Steve Jobs By donating to this project today, you will invest in developing the thinkers, problem-solvers and innovators of tomorrow. Children are naturally curious about their world and, with proper nurturing and resources, will actively engage, create and contribute. Together we can generate the space our students need to formulate, develop and share their ideas.
