My students need to experience the life cycle of butterflies with a butterfly classroom kit, life sequence cards, a butterfly book and a life cycle set to help with their understanding of metamorphosis.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Seeing is believing" and metamorphosis is hard to imagine without a visual experience. However, if the students themselves become the scientist, they can "see and believe." Life science requires a hands-on approach with active participation in observation and verbal and written dialog.
My students are inquisitive, active individuals.
They come to school ready to learn and try their best to achieve our high expectations everyday. Many times parents learn from the child, as the student talks about school activities and invites their families to come and see. I teach at a Title 1 school with a very high population of non-native English speakers, students coming from single-parent families and with most students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of the students have limited resources outside of school so their only chance to experience enriching activities is at school.
My Project
This life cycle of butterflies kit will enable my students to not just read about science but become the scientist. Students will be able to put a visual experience to the wonder of metamorphosis. I will read to them the books provided in the kit, and provide journals for them to record what they observe with the live larva as it transforms. They will be able to watch and record changes, discussing their scientific finds with each other, as well as family members. Students will observe caterpillars change into chrysalis, then emerge as butterflies. The model set of the life cycle will provide opportunities to review the cycle and tell others of what they experienced. The sequencing cards will lead their discovery to other cycles of life.
All students learn best when they can experience real things and teach what they learn to others.
Please help me bring the life cycle of butterflies to life for them within the classroom. This experience will help them understand and apply this concept in other academic areas!
